As we celebrate 175 years of Jointa Lime Company, As we celebrate 175 years of Jointa Lime Company, we’re excited to share stories from our history, our people, and the legacy that built the Jointa name. Throughout this anniversary series, we’ll take a look back at the moments, milestones, and traditions that have shaped our company since 1841.

One question has come up time and time again over the years: “Where did the name Jointa come from?”

The story behind the name goes back more than 300 years—and it’s one rooted in quality, craftsmanship, and history.

In the mid-1600s in Lime Rock, Rhode Island, quarrymen discovered a unique limestone formation where limestone met a dark green rock called horneblende. They referred to this meeting point as a “Hard Jointer.” By the early 1800s, the lime produced from these ledges became known as the gold standard for masons because of its bright white color and fast-setting performance.

In 1841, entrepreneur John Keenan recognized what the “Jointa” name represented: quality. When he began operations in Glens Falls as Jointa Lime Co., he adopted the name to reflect the same standard of excellence associated with the legendary Rhode Island stone.

From the original 3-acre “Jointa Hole” in Rhode Island to operations across New York today, the Jointa name has stood the test of time for more than 175 years.

Today, every Jointa truck, quarry, plant, and project carries forward a legacy built on quality, hard work, and pride in what we do.
